I had the pleasure of spending three nights at the lovely Four Seasons Resort Hualalai on the Kona-Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. The resort features 243 guest rooms and suites and seven swimming pools, my favorite being the adult-only infinity pool with a swim up bar. There is also a small, protected area for swimming on the beach, but in general, most of the beach area is too rocky and rough for swimming. Instead, one can enjoy private beach cabanas for rental or the many chairs and hammocks across the sand to soak in the sun and scenery.

One of the major highlights of my stay was playing the Jack Nicklaus signature golf course at the resort. The course struck a nice balance between fun and difficult, with most of the fairways carved out of the old lava fields in the area. It is a beautiful and challenging course, though I found the greens to be decently accessible and enjoyed that most bunkers were on the left (being a Jack Nicklaus designed course) as someone who tends to slice. Instead of water and bunkers, the toughest feature of the course was the lava hazards that one can easily find themselves hitting into.

I was also hosted for two lovely dinners at The Beach Tree and Ulu restaurants on resort property. At the Beach Tree, I participated in their wonderful Tuscan night featuring uku fish while enjoying the view of an amazing sunset on the beach. At Ulu, I tried the sushi and Ono fish, calamari, and a cool cocktail called the Blushing Geisha. Both dining experiences were wonderful, with great outdoor views especially at sunset. It was a very pleasant and relaxing dining experience.

And last but definitely not least, there was the room. The best part of the room was the great balcony with a view of the ocean and Beach Tree pool. The room also had great accessibility to all pools, the lobby, and the golf course. While the resort offered golf carts to take you anywhere you needed to go, I found everything to only be a short walk away. Overall, I had an amazing stay at the resort, and I highly recommend you check it out yourself if you find yourself vacationing on the Big Island.

Upon arrival at Kona International Airport you will be greeted by a Four Seasons Resort Hualalai representative who will assist you with your luggage and direct you to your prearranged transportation to the resort.

OCEAN POOL

This rectangular “pool” is carved out of the oceanfront lava rock and features a natural breakwater. The result is an ocean pool, measuring 656 feet (200 metres) in length and ranging from zero to five feet (zero to 1.5 metres) in depth. Protected from the waves and home to sea life including honu (turtle), this is a great way to experience the ocean with the feel of a pool.
